Mission: Mission 0 - Leaving the Blue Marble
Location: Earth
Timeline: Day 1 - 1300 hours, local time

"Remember, Momma loves you, and I'll only be a call away, alright?" Varina watched the 5-year-old boy nod his head as she helf him at arm's length. "Good. And whenever I get the chance, I'll come visit you." She pulled him close for a hug. "Oh, Momma's gonna miss you, Sweetie." When she let go, she stood and met the gaze of her ex husband. She didn't friwn, as she wanted, with Erick there, but neither did she smile. "I would like to be able to talk to him any nights I'm not working," she said flatly.

Darren Wolfe sighed. She knew it was his way of saying she was inconveniencing him. "We won't necessarily be home each night. Maybe once a week, any weekday you want."

She wanted to scream, but held it back. "That's absurd! I need to see him more than once a week! Every other night, and I'll let you know if I'm working a night shift."

"Fine, but those missed nights are just that, missed. I can't keep rearranging our schedule, and he'll be in class during the day."

She did frown now, but she knew he wasn't gonna budge more than that. Years of arguments had taught her as much. "Fine." Her attention returned one last time to her son, and her expression was immediately one of love, with a big smile. "Hey, bucko, come give me one last hug before I go." The boy ran to her and threw his hands aroind her neck. "I love you so much."

"Love you too, Momma."

That almost undid her, but she held on to her emotions until she was walking away. Perhaps a starship would be no place for a kid his age, but she still felt, and always would feel, cheated that Darren had gotten complete custody, even when she was just a transport away.

But now, this assignment would keep her away for extended periods of time, and she'd rarely get back to Earth. She knew she would miss all his moments and milestones, and it killed her, but this was her last chance to get the position she had worked for, and knew she deserved.

And besides, even if she were here, Darren wasn't giving her much more access than she'd have out there.

She swore she'd never forgive him for it.
