To keep a family together
Mission 5: Mysterious Strangers
Timeline: after beaming back
The female Orions that had been recovered had been transported to the Orion's medical facility. Lyras beelined to the woman he'd transported back almost instantly, as soon as he arrived back on the ship. "Doctor!" he called out, alerting the chief medical officer, who no doubt had already been summoned.
"How is she? The woman I had transported back, the crush victim." He anxiously looked around. "I was not certain if I should, but leaving her there would have killed her for sure..."
Steffan rushed to the woman's biobed, tricorder already in hand and open ready to begin an initial scan. "What happened?" He asked as he concentrated on the results the tricorder have him.
"She was crushed under a console," Lyras reported, "I have administered pain medication and I have tried to make her comfortable. There was nothing else I could do under the cirucmstances but with the decaying orbit, I had no choice but to transport her here."
"You did the right thing, Ensign." Haas replied as he assessed the patient. "She has three broken ribs, her left lung has been punctured as a result. Her spleen has ruptured and had a fracture on her vertebrae. I'm going to have to operate to save her life."
"She has a child," Lyras supplied, "and she is a sibling to Lieutenant Vesu. What would you like me to tell her when she arrives?" It was really only a matter of when, not if, Lyras assumed
Javn was fluttering between the Orion child and the woman found with him. Both stable, if not a bit shaken up. The humans own nerves still frazzled, the male who had held her at gun point was being seen to by a fellow nurse, something she was grateful for in the moment. Hearing the Doctors assessment of the far more critical Orion Javn made her way to them, "I'll ready the operating room." Her violet eyes flashed to Lyras for half a second before returning to Haas.
Lyras caught the look and smiled briefly. "Do you wish for me to assist, or should I see to the other woman?" he asked, "is the infant unharmed? The mother may wish to see it once she comes out of surgery."
"I think I'm going to need both of your help with the operation. Her injuries are very extensive." Haas replied as he moved to the nearby console and began a more in-depth scan of the Orion.
Startled, Lyras looked up. "I am not qualified as a surgeon," he stated uncertainly, looking from Haas to Javn, and back to Haas, "are you certain you need me?" Sure, he had assisted before, but not in this century. He was still learning, he was a very junior doctor for a very good reason.
"You needn't worry Lyras, you will merely be assisting. Just follow my lead, the doctor will voice what he needs of us. Trust me." Javn held eye contact with Lyras as she spoke. "Your presence could very well be the determining factor that saves her life."
"We learn by doing." Steffan replied with a small smile. "Please get yourselves scrubbed and ready for surgery while I just stabilise her vitals enough for the operation."
"Yes sir," Lyras answered, casting Javn a grateful look. He really did appreciate her support.
"Come, we don't have much time." Javn led Lyras to the sterilizing area in a hurry to prep themselves for the surgery.
Steffan worked diligently trying to get the patient's blood pressure and oxygen levels to a stable position. They only had a narrow window to get this done before she started to deteriorate.
Lyras was very grateful for Javn's stable presence during the complicated surgery.. He followed the orders Haas gave him to the letter, offering very little in terms of comments or questions. Now was not the time to distract anyone with them, he reasoned. "She will surive, will she not?" he finally asked, when they were nearing completion.
Doctor Haas finished closing up the surgical opening he made in the Orion woman's abdomen. "She's not out of the woods yet but I believe she will make a good if not a full recovery."
Lyras nodded slowly. "That is good. I am certain Lieutenant Vesu will be glad to hear that." He looked around. "I am surprised, she is not here already?"
"I'm sure she she will be soon." Javn said with a bit more optimism then she intended.
"When she gets here can you point her in my direction please, I'd like to explain what we've done before she see's her." Haas said as he began to pull off his surgical gloves.
