Mission 5: Mysterious Strangers
Location: Deck 1: Main Bridge
Timeline: MD 01 - 0900 Hours
Lt. Huxley frowned at his tactical console behind the captain's chair as a sensor started beeping at him. "Captain, there's another ship entering orbit."
Barrett didn't like uninvited guests to his parties without knowing ahead of time. "Why didn't we detect it approach the planet?"
Statzia tapped on her console, shaking her head slightly. "They dropped out of warp very suddenly, sir. Maybe a navigational malfunction? Or--?"
Vesu squinted at the view screen from the engineering station, "They look like they're venting plasma- either they've taken damage or they're doing that intentionally, but on those ships it's a little strange to do that intentionally right after coming out of warp. Looks like an Orion cargo vessel, without the cargo."
"Hail them," Commander Diza replied. "Maybe we can lend a hand," she half asked, half explained to Captain Barrett.
Lieutenant Huxley tapped his console and the telltale whistle chime of the broadband hail filled the room. Several moments passed before he let out a faint sight. "No response, commander."
Captain Barrett arched one eyebrow at the viewscreen before looking over to the ops station. "Miss Liski, what is the condition of the vessel?"
"It's not good." Statzia's fingers skimmed across the console as chirps indicated the results of her scans. "Damage is extensive. Major structural integrity loss on the starboard side, and their orbit is starting to decay. Main power appears to be failing, and assuming anyone's alive, there's no way the ship'll survive impact with the atmosphere."
"Is it possible to pull them out of orbit using the tractor beam," he asked her in reply.
Statzia's face wrinkled into a grimace. "I'm not sure that the structural integrity will hold up under the strain. I'd recommend trying to retrieve any survivors before using a tractor beam on the ship, sir."
"Bridge to transporter room 1, can you lock onto any survivors of the ship, pull them out?" Commander Diza asked. Her expression becoming concerned.
"Negative, commander. There's too much interference from that ship's ion drive. It's acting like a scattering shield on their patterns," said Chief Hall over the intercom.
"Can you get us on the ship?" Mis asked and then turned to Logan, "We could bring pattern enhancers, get as many people off as we can or stabilize the orbit if that's possible?"
Barrett nodded in agreement. "Excellent idea, Number One. Your first priority should be to find a way to stabilize the orbit and rescue any survivors for medical treatment." He looked at the viewscreen again before turning back to her and adding, "I'll hold the fort down, as usual."
"Yes sir," Mis answered, feeling the usual pang of nervousness that she always did before an away mission. As much as she didn't want to she spoke again. "Liski, Huxley, you're with me." Then she tapped her combadge, "Ensign Lyras, report to transporter room two. As an afterthought she added, "Lieutenant Vesu, would you like to accompany us, since you might be familiar with the layout of a ship like this?"
"I'd be happy to join you." Vesu nodded and closed out her console to follow, "I might be helpful in getting it orbiting."
"Then let's go."
