Keep Your Friends Close, Part 2
Mission 1: Unscheduled Madness
Location: Deck 1 - Ready Room
Timeline: Day 10 - 1100 Hours
Barrett was in his ready room going over the latest reports from engineering. They looked like they were getting ready to try some experiments in an effort to free the ship. He was hoping that something would work soon. This whole detour from their original mission was weighing on him.
"Commander Barrett, We have a priority one call coming in from Starbase 433. A Commodore Uvar needs to speak with you immediately."
"Put it through, lieutenant."
"Commander." Uvar greeted the captain over the comm.
Commodore, what can I do for you?"
"Commander. I need you to submit to a subspace interview with me at your soonest convenience. I am also ordering you to turn over any classified material that you have shared with your executive officer, including yours, and her logs."
Logan scrunched his face in confusion. He didn't know this man and he certainly wasn't in his chain of command. He lightly tugged at his uniform front. "May I ask why you are requesting this information, sir?"
Uvar's antennae leaned curiously forward as he surveyed the captain. "Your new acting chief of intelligence will explain when he arrives. I trust that I can count on your co-operation commander?" Uvar asked the question in such a way that it was less a request and more a statement of fact.
Barrett wasn't just about to hand over sensitive information to a commodore that he never met before. Any requests would have to go through the chain of command and be vetted as per procedure dictated. He wasn't going to be rude, however. Diplomacy skills were vital when dealing with alien cultures, but also came in handy within Starfleet. "I'll look into it as soon as possible, sir."
"Very good commander. Uvar Out." The monitor cleared to display the UFP logo, leaving the commander alone in his office. The silence didn't last long as the sound of the door chime echoed around the room.
"Enter," he uttered as he turned to see who was walking into the ready room.
Tiber entered the captains ready room and stood at attention as the doors closed behind him.
"I apologize for interrupting you sir, but I need to speak with you on an important matter."
Barrett gestured with his hand at the chair opposite him. "Please, have a seat, ensign." He tugged at his uniform front and placed his hands on the arm rests of his chair. "What can I do for you?"
Tiber took a seat opposite the commander and paused for a moment before beginning.
"Sir, Commander Diza informed me earlier today that she would like me to take over as acting head of intelligence aboard the Orion. While I'm flattered by the appointment, I'm aware I'm very young for such an assignment, my relationship with the commander poses a... problem.
Logan could see that the young man was uncomfortable and wasn't sure of this conversation. "Please, continue."
"Sir... apart from the obvious issue of myself and the commander pursuing a relationship while I report directly to her as an acting department head... There are addition concerns."
"By all means, share them."
This was the part Tiber wasn't looking forward to, but it had to be addressed. "Sir, as an intelligence officer, even a junior ranking officer, I have access to highly classified information in the course of my job. As an acting head of department my clearance level will match and in some cases surpass even yours..." Tiber stopped for a moment before getting to the crux of it.
"Sir, I care about Nokomis very much. I know I haven't known her long but I've never felt like this about anyone before. If I want to pursue an intimate relationship with her, she will need to be vetted by my superiors in intelligence in order to verify that she is not a security threat."
Barrett's brow knit slightly at the prospect of Starfleet Intelligence having to dig into Nokomis' on a more detailed level. "I see. And what does that include?"
"It should be relatively simple as she is a serving officer whose records can be checked and verified. Her family and friends will be inconspicuously questioned by operatives and provided my superiors are satisfied I will be given permission to conduct a relationship with Nokomis. I've no doubt that my station chief will be in contact with you before the day is out."
"As a matter of fact, I was contacted prior to your arrival." He tugged his uniform. "I have no problem with you having a relationship with Commander Diza as long as you both can maintain your professionalism in your duties. Also, Intelligence department doesn't particularly coincide with the daily operations of the ship. That being said, I will do what I can to facilitate a smooth process as long as it doesn't compromise the ship."
Tiber gave a short grunt, He wasn't at all surprised that Thelek had contacted the captain so quickly. "I appreciate it sir. You have known her for years i cant believe anything is going to come up during vetting, but protocol is clear."
"I don't see a problem as long as their... vetting... isn't too invasive," said Barrett. He knew Missy a long time and didn't want this whole thing to spiral out of control.
"Hopefully this will all be over soon. I would rather it not be this way."
"As do I, Tiberius. We'll get through it just fine." He offered a polite smile and added, "Dismissed."
