Warp Power Now
Mission 1: Unscheduled Madness
Location: Main Engineering, Deck 36
Timeline: Day 1 - 2315 Hours
Bethany stepped into engineering a while after reporting in to the Capt. Things were a bit chaotic, the warp core appeared to be off line. She searched for Lt. Miazami.
Delothian cursed in El-Aurian and slammed a panel shut before walking out on to the main floor of the deck and began to stare at the warp core. It's lack of matter and antimatter swirls making him more agitated.
"Stupid machine!" he yelled throwing one of his flip flops at it.
He had been off duty, as at 2300 when the core stopped working he had been called out of bed and he didn't feel like getting all dressed up with nowhere to go. As such he had a pair of shorts on, a t-shirt that said 'I'm an Engineer. To save time lets just assume I'm never wrong.' and now minus one flip flop.
Nokomis entered engineering and stopped at the sight before her. Their chief engineer appeared to be wearing shorts and some sort of sandals, except that he'd removed one and had just thrown it at the warp core. Nokomis had dealt with some characters in her time but this was a new one. "Uh, evening Lieutenant."
"It certainly is that, evening." He replied almost annoyed to be called out of bed. "I cannot get the warp core booted up again, I've no idea why without delving further into this madness. Something is blocking the injectors... therefore no deuterium and antideuterium, no matter-antimatter reaction, no warp core." he said rubbing his good eye.
He was also scanning the room for his ACEO, Lt. O'Malley whom he knew had reported on before they left.
"And did throwing your shoe at it help?" Nokomis was trying hard to act professional but she had failed to keep the smile off her face. "I'm not engineer, my background is in science but I thought I would offer my help, an extra pair of hands if you needed it."
"No... now my foot is cold." he replied looking back at the warp core. "In for a penny..." he added and decided to throw his other flip flop at it before turning back to the XO.
"A fine pair of hands too." he said with a smirk, "If you can shed any scientific light on this situation then I welcome your assistance Commander." He added waving her towards the main part of Engineering and further into the mess they were all in.
Ignoring his comment about her hands Nokomis followed him. Something was nagging at the back of her mind about this situation, something she had read before? A similar case? Nokomis knew it would come to her later. "Alright then, put me to work."
"Well I am going to check the magnetic fields surrounding the injector coils. Something is bothering me there and tells me the antimatter integrator needs seeing too. I believe that is stopping the injection needed to start the reaction within the core." Delothian stated simply. "If you could check the deuterium injector Commander and see if there is a problem there?"
"Certainly." Grateful to have something to do so she didn't have to stand there staring at her chief engineer in the outfit he was wearing, she wandered off to do what she'd been asked.
Bethany rounded the corner looking at the madman who just threw his flip flop at the warp core. "Pardon me sir, but I am pretty sure that it needs more than a flip flop, maybe a steeled toe shoe might get it kicked in the arse." She smiled at him. "LT JG O'Malley reporting for duty" recognizing him from his picture, although the attire threw her off a minute.
"AH!" he yelled. "Another engineering enters the fray. Welcome to the pit Lieutenant... as you can see we are having 'performance' issues."
"I see that" She accessed the nearest computer station and let her fingers do the walking. Checking alignment, all the normal issues. " Level 3 diagnostic is useless" She yelled over the chaos.
Nokomis resisted the urge to roll her eyes over that comment. It wasn't meant for her but one could hardly ignore the chief engineer if he was going to shout across engineering like that. "There's always the possibility that it isn't the ship at all, but the particular area we are in. I seem to remember something about a starship unable to generate a warp field, I just don't remember any of the details."
"That seems more feasible..." Delothian replied rubbing his beard. "I can find nothing wrong with any of our hardware, warp core is fine, nacelles working within normal parameters. Mechanically our ship is fine... this part of space we are in 'feels' wrong. Simply cannot explain it."
"Then maybe I was right," She frowned slightly as she reached behind her to massage the back of her neck. "If I could just remember what I'd read. So frustrating . . . getting old." Nokomis mumbled. She glanced up thinking Del would still be standing nearby. Her eyes fell on her father and she started, stumbling out of her chair. "Dad?!"
Bethany looked at Nokomis,"What the hell is she talking about?" Looking the the Lt. pointing to the Lt Commander.
"What are you doing here?" She didn't glance at the other two but they seemed to be making no noise, as shocked as she was no doubt. As Executive Officer she should have been informed of any guests aboard Orion before they boarded. That meant Logan had been keeping something from her.
Jalmar shook his head. "I'm so disappointed in you Moonflower. You have every bit as much intelligence and drive as Logan and yet here you sit behind him and not his equal."
Taken aback slightly Delothian moved towards the XO slowly, "Commander, are you alright? Your father is not here, you are in Engineering." he stated waving his hand in front of her face to try and snap her free of what was going on in her mind.
Nokomis' face became neutral. "That's not fair and you know it. I never had his ambition. I was happy to be in my own corner of the universe, even in his shadow. You were the one who pushed and pushed until I was in the light whether I wanted to be or not. It wasn't a competition between Logan and I."
Bethany turned her head with a jerk,"Is she talking about the Captain?" Turning back to the engineering panel. "I think her cheese had slid of her toast."
Delothian moved across to the XO and ushered her into his office. His engineering teams didn't need to see her in the transitive state she appeared to be in, and the words she was conveying... they seemed rather private of nature. Thinking back he too had a similar event in his quarters but shrugged it off as a more 'vivid' dream, maybe there was more going on.
