Returning to Course
Mission 0 - Leaving the Blue Marble
Location: Deck 2 - Nokomis' Quarters
Timeline: Day 1 - 2000 Hours
Nokomis looked in the mirror, turning her head sideways. She'd pulled her shoulder length hair into two braids and her spots were more pronounced without the hair to cover them up. She sighed as if disappointed with the results and moved toward the living room to the replicator. Mis wore cotton pajamas and a soft lightweight fleece robe over the top. Her feet were bare as she walked around her own quarters. She'd taken just a sip of the rooibos tea she'd ordered when the chime on her door sounded. Her eyes rose, looking at the time, then called out, "Come in."
Logan stepped through wearing his captain's vest instead of the jacket and lacked his black beret atop his head. The doors hissed shut as his eyes looked her over, instantly regretting that he interrupted her evening. "Oh, I'm sorry, Missy. I didn't realize you were settling in for a quiet night. We can talk at another time." He wheeled about to leave and give her some peace and quiet.
Nokmomis reached out her hand and caught Logan on the arm. "Don't be silly. I'm not ready for sleep or anything, " She pulled him back in. "What's going on?"
He was pulled back in to let the doors hiss shut a second time. "I uh... well, it's about a woman." He started to pace slowly in the room. "I didn't plan for this to happen and Lord knows I've always shied away from this but... I've slept with someone under my command already." He stood there and looked her in the eyes, giving her a look that screamed 'HELP!'
Trying her hardest not to smirk Nokomis asked, "Let me guess, Lieutenant Kelly?" She pointed to the couch and walked over to the replicator coming back with two glasses in her hand. "Take a deep breath before you drink that. And before you freak out even further, no, she didn't tell me. But I met her yesterday and she slipped and started calling you by your first name before she caught herself."
Logan looked up at her in mild surprise as he took the offered cup, ignoring her warning and taking a big first gulp. "You've always been very perceptive." His eyes searched around for answers as he continued, "This hasn't happened before. And now it's infinitely harder to manage since everyone is under my command on this ship. On the other hand, why do I have to be relegated to celibacy simply by keeping my station?"
"Well at the time I thought it odd, but now it makes perfect sense." She sat down on the couch next to him and pulled her feet up between them. "You don't. I honestly don't see a problem as long as both of you are doing your jobs." Nokomis hoped that distraction wasn't the reason Eli had dropped the container yesterday.
"I could see that line of reasoning if she were a nameless officer, relegated to another part of the ship with a larger chain of command between us but we work together. She's a senior officer on this ship which means I'll be giving her direct orders on a daily basis. How could a personal relationship ever work in that environment?" He took a long, slow breath before another sip of his drink. "Not that it would... but if it were to become more, and if I were ever ordered to send her to her death..." He stopped the thought since she knew exactly what he was trying to say.
"True that is something to think about. And this is hypothetical anyway," Nokomis said it as more of a statement than a question. "But I'm pretty sure she knows the rules by now. Still, you could talk to her. There's a cheerful conversation. 'Honey, how do you feel about me ordering you to your death?'"
Logan let out a small chuckle as he gave her a look. "Your counseling skills are second to none as usual, Missy." He held out his glass toward her. "I guess I'm the only one having a second round?"
"That's why you come to me." She got the hint and moved toward the replicator. "Aldebaran Whiskey." She said to it and retrieved the new glass. "And yes, it will keep me awake and I thought one of us should be somewhat objective. Anyway Logan," she handed him the glass. "Talk to her. She might think it was just a one night stand or plan on it meaning more. Not going to know unless you ask." Nokomis sat down again and let out a breath, pushing her toes against his leg. "Been an interesting couple of days already hasn't it?"
He smiled and looked at nothing in particular as she pressed against his leg. It reminded him of times in tree houses and using flashlights. Maybe he should go talk with Eli at some point. He stored that mental note and brought himself back to the conversation with a contented sigh. "That's not an understatement... First the Kobiyashi Maru test, then I trip over my own desires, then you trip, literally." He took a sip of the whiskey, savoring the green liquid as it burned on the way down.
"Oh you heard about that hmm? That wasn't a trip it was a wrong step. But I got my physical taken care of because of it which reminds me, I believe our good doctor would like to see you as well." She smiled at him and put her head against the side of the couch.
A widening smirk crossed his lips as the alcohol started to make his body tingle. He nodded faintly as he looked at the glass before taking another big sip. "I'm the captain, right? It's my job to stay informed." He gave her an innocent wink and wiggled his booted feet.
"Really? Did you happen to hear how I sprained my ankle? Your new girlfriend tried to kill me," Nokomis answered him, holding back her smile.
At that, he let out a laugh and reached out with his hand to push her softly. "Well she didn't do a good job, did she? I suppose I'll have to write her up for failing to follow orders properly... or something..." He finished his drink and set the glass down on the nearby table.
"I think she was punished enough by seeing me on the floor, quite horrified actually. And besides, if she had succeeded then who would you come to for advice about her?" She changed the subject slightly, "Seriously, if this works out then I'm happy for you." Nokomis didn't want to think about what he'd been like right after Betty disappeared. She'd almost taken a leave of absence just to go and take care of him.
His smile faded into a contented smirk of genuine appreciation for her. "I suppose I'd have to keep my thoughts to myself. I'm lucky that isn't the case." He slowly rose from the couch and stretched his back, feeling that it was about time to head to bed. "Thank you for always being so supportive, Missy. You can always return my boat to course."
