The Heart of It
Mission 0 - Leaving the Blue Marble
Location: Ten Forward
Timeline: Day 1- 2000 hours
Personnel files, PADDS, faces, it was all swirling around in her brain when Mis stepped off the turbolift on deck ten. She resisted the urge to yawn as she entered the lounge and found a table far away from anyone who might suddenly decide to introduce themselves. Nokomis generally liked people but everyone has their limits she felt the need to recharge before going back to work.
With the ship yet to launch and crew still gathering, there was only so much that her department could do. So far T’Sai had gotten their clearance approved, organized data files, and even created a schedule. However, there was the inevitable downtime. It had been highly suggested that she visit Ten Forward. She had gathered that her suggestion was to meet people and socialize, however this Vulcan used the opportunity to try the ship’s plomeek soup at an empty table by the window.
Movement made Mis look up from staring at the patterns on the carpet. A Vulcan woman had entered and sat down facing away from Mis. It couldn't have been any plainer that she wanted a table to herself. Nokomis smiled and stood up, her need to recharge suddenly feeling less important at the moment. She approached the woman and stood, waiting for her attention. "Do you mind if I sit?" She finally asked.
With an arched eyebrow, T'Sai responded, "You may sit." Normally, this intrusion would have made her a bit uncomfortable. However, she had not met with the First Officer and this presented a good chance to do so. She knew very little about the Kriosians aside from their noble hierarchy and metamorphs, she decided to try out the tried and true small talk method. "How are preparations coming for the Orion's departure?"
"Very well," Nokomis sat down across from her. "No issues to speak of yet." And there hadn't been any major issues with meeting the crew either, except for her spraining her ankle but that had been an accident and it was hardly worth mentioning any of this to a Vulcan. "I'll hardly insult your intelligence by telling you that I didn't intend to interrupt since that was exactly what I was hoping to do. I'll be quick and then you don't have to report to my office. Is there anything you require to get settled or any issues you'd like discussed?"
“I am not bothered,” T’Sai stated. Had this been the beginning of her career at Starfleet, she probably would’ve been annoyed. However at this point, she had become used to these kinds of interruptions and had grown to see them as a proper contact channel. “We are experiencing difficulty obtaining Orion clearances for a few members of the department,” she stated without emotion, “I can forward you the list of crew members, if you prefer.”
"Please do. I Will take a look at my earliest convenience." Nokomis answered her. "If that's all then I'll let you get back to your evening. However," Nokomis paused as she stood up. "I was trying to put together a game of Tongo one night a week if you are interested. I don't know if you play."
T'Sai moved her head in a single nod, "I have not played the game, however I would enjoy learning." It wasn't particularly that she enjoyed socializing, but T'Sai knew that becoming socially active was a good way to earn the trust of a new crew. "Where is this game played?"
"That is a good question. I would not object to having the game in my quarters. There's plenty of room and it's only once a week after all." Nokomis answered her, curious to see if she would accept in such a place. "I will of course be inviting anyone on the Senior staff who would like to attend."
Many First Officers in the fleet held such game nights in their quarters to help build chemistry among their senior officers. With a nod, T’Sai agreed, “I will attend. I am certain that I will be able to learn to play the game.” Almost letting it slide that she actually found enjoyment from being around others, the Vulcan added, “It will assist me in building rapport with the other officers.”
Nokomis smiled. "Good. I will let you know the day and time. Enjoy your evening." She moved to get up. She'd butted into her solitude enough.
"Thank you for the invitation, Commander," T'Sai responded, going back to her PADD.
